You’re in a meeting. Someone presents data. You see the problems immediately – sample size too small, controls missing, conclusion doesn’t follow from what the data actually shows.
Your training kicks in without conscious thought. So you speak up. Not rudely. Not aggressively. Just scientifically.
“Can you walk me through the controls here? I’m not seeing how we account for…”
But then something happens.
The brief pause before someone responds. Just a beat too long. The slight stiffening of bodies. Eyes shift away from you, then back. You catch the micro-expression on the presenter’s face before they smooth it away. Someone says, “We can discuss that offline,” and the tone is pleasant enough, but you heard the edge underneath.
The meeting moves on. As though you hadn’t just raised a legitimate methodological concern.
Later, you check the meeting notes. Your question isn’t there. Or it’s been rephrased into something vaguer, softer, less pointed. “Linda asked about the methodology” rather than “Linda identified that controls are missing.”
Nothing you can point to as explicitly punitive. But everything adding up to: your input was unwelcome.
I am using a methodology example here but it could be any scientific or behavioural issue that you are calling out.
You notice this pattern repeating. Several times in the past month. Every time the room went cool. Every time the conversation shifted quickly away.
But when your male colleague challenges data, people engage with his points, ask follow-up questions. When you do the same thing, they dismiss and move on.
Your scientist brain says: This is a pattern and it is real.
But another part of you says: You’re being too sensitive. You’re imagining it. You’re making this into something it isn’t.
And this is where it gets particularly maddening.
Are you being gaslit?
You can’t prove the resistance is happening.
If you tried to explain it to someone, you’d sound paranoid. Oversensitive. Weak. “I just feel like people don’t like it when I speak up.” “It’s just a feeling.” “I’m probably imagining it.”
So you face two impossible options. Trust your perception and feel crazy because you can’t prove anything. Or doubt your perception and feel crazy because you know something’s wrong.
Either way, you end up questioning your own reality.
And what makes this particularly cruel for you as a scientist? Your entire professional training is built on trusting observations, collecting data, identifying patterns, drawing conclusions from evidence.
But now you’re doubting the very skill that makes you good at your job.
When you observe that questioning methodology consistently produces cool responses whilst your male colleague’s identical behaviour produces warm engagement, your pattern-recognition says: different treatment, same behaviour, systematic bias.
But your social conditioning says: you’re making too much of this, you’re being paranoid, you’re the problem.
Let me be very clear about something. You’re not imagining it.
What you’re actually detecting
What you’re experiencing are micro-rejections. And they’re real, measurable, and well-documented in research.
Your scientist brain, the same one that notices when sample size is three instead of thirty, when controls are missing, when data doesn’t quite fit the model, is also exceptionally good at noticing social data.
Micro-facial expressions that last 40-70 milliseconds. Fast enough that people don’t consciously control them. Slow enough that your visual system catches them.
Vocal tone shifts. The slight hardening when they say “interesting point.” The way “good question” sounds different when directed at you versus your male colleague.
Body language. The pulling back. The crossed arms. The turning slightly away.
Conversational patterns. How quickly they move past your input. Whether they ask follow-up questions or offer perfunctory acknowledgment before changing topics.
Energy shifts. The room was warm. Now it’s cool. This seems most subjective, but it’s actually measurable.
Your pattern-recognition ability, your professional superpower, is detecting these patterns. You’re not imagining them.
But because these signals are subtle, because they’re micro-level, because they’re individually deniable, you can’t call them out without confirming suspicion that you’re “too sensitive.”
And this is particularly disappointing because you were trained from girlhood to read precisely these signals. To sense emotional temperature. To detect disapproval. Your safety as a girl often depended on correctly reading whether you were “too much.”
So when you speak up about methodology and detect resistance, your entire nervous system responds. Not because you’re weak. Because you were trained over decades to fit in by reading precisely these signals.
Now, as a woman scientist, those two skill sets, scientific pattern-recognition and social threat-detection, operate simultaneously.
One part of your brain tracks the scientific discussion. Another part scans for social threat signals.
This is exhausting. But it’s also why you’re not wrong about what you’re detecting.
The two invisible contracts
When you question methodology and feel invisible resistance, you’re violating what I think of as invisible contracts.
The gender contract: women facilitate rather than challenge, women smooth over rather than point out problems, women make people comfortable rather than uncomfortable. Nobody hands you a document saying “these are the rules.” But the rules exist. You know them. Everyone knows them.
The hierarchy contract: junior people don’t question senior people’s work, scientists don’t question leadership’s preferred interpretations, “team players” align with the direction being set. Again, unwritten. Universally understood.
And yet male scientists can break the hierarchy contract and often get away with it. They’re “detail-oriented.” They’re “committed to excellence.” Their challenge reads as professional dedication.
But female scientists who break the hierarchy contract also break the gender contract. And breaking the gender contract carries invisible, deniable, but very real penalties.
That’s the resistance you’re feeling. It’s not in your head. It’s an actual social cost for violating invisible rules about how women are meant to behave.
What this does to you over time
Your scientific training says: If you see flawed methodology, you must speak up. That’s professional obligation, that’s what scientists do.
Your lived experience says: Every time you speak up, you create resistance, people pull away, you become “that person.”
You’re caught. Stay silent and betray your scientific integrity. Speak up and face invisible social costs that you can detect but can’t prove.
Until something shifts. The resistance you feel from others begins to create resistance within yourself.
You start resisting your own impulse to speak up. Maybe I shouldn’t say anything. Maybe it’s not that important. Maybe I’m being too nitpicky. Maybe I’m the problem.
This is how systems silence women scientists without ever calling them “difficult.” They don’t silence you explicitly, they don’t have to, they train you to silence yourself through accumulated costs that are individually deniable but collectively devastating.
And each time, a part of your scientific identity dies. Death by a thousand small betrayals of what you know to be true.
The particular cruelty
You chose science, in part, because it promised to be different. Objective, evidence-based, beyond the politics of gender. You thought: here, at least, truth would matter more than social performance.
You were wrong. Science is just as political, just as biased, just as rigged as everywhere else.
You built your entire professional identity on scientific values. You developed rigorous thinking to be taken seriously. You built credibility through precision because charm wasn’t going to be enough.
Your scientific rigour became armour against sexism.
But now that same armour is being used against you. The rigour that proved your competence now reads as coldness. Your precision now reads as nitpicking. Your standards now read as unreasonableness. Your integrity now reads as failure to collaborate.
This reversal is devastating. The thing that was supposed to protect you, scientific excellence, is now the thing that isolates you.
What comes next
First, you needed to know: you’re not crazy.
You’re a woman scientist detecting real patterns of systematic bias using the same pattern-recognition skills that make you good at your job.
That’s not a problem with you. That’s data about the system.
And data is something scientists know what to do with.
The question isn’t: Am I imagining this?
The question is: Now that I know I’m not imagining it, what do I do?
